How to Book Patente B Theory Exam at Motorizzazione
Step-by-step guide to booking your Patente B theory exam directly at the Motorizzazione Civile as a privatista candidate, including required documents and fees.
If you are studying for the Patente B as a privatista (self-study candidate), you book your theory exam directly with the Motorizzazione Civile. Here is the step-by-step process for 2026.
Can privatisti book the theory exam online?
Each office sets how you book (in 2020 UMC Ancona, for example, took theory exam bookings by phone), so check your office's notices (avvisi all'utenza) on the Portale dell'Automobilista. The ministry's online booking system is for driving schools; we found no national online booking for privatisti.
What You Need Before Booking
Before you can register as a privatista and book the theory exam, you must have:
- Medical certificate (certificato medico) — issued by an authorised doctor no more than 3 months before you apply
- Italian residency (residenza) — you must be registered as a resident in an Italian municipality
- Fiscal code (codice fiscale)
- Valid identity document (passport or national ID)
- Permesso di soggiorno (if non-EU citizen)
Registration at the Motorizzazione
Unlike autoscuola candidates (whose school handles everything, including booking the exam online), privatisti apply directly:

- Pay the state fees on PagoPA (through the Portale dell'Automobilista): tariffa 20, €10.20 + €16, for the theory exam application, and tariffa 21, €16, for the practical exam. Keep the receipts.
- Fill in modulo TT2112 (available from the Portale dell'Automobilista).
- Take it to your local Motorizzazione Civile office (UMC) with the attachments: your medical certificate, the payment receipts, a recent passport-style photo, and copies of your ID and (if you are a non-EU citizen) your residence permit, with the originals to show.
- The office processes your application and gives you a confirmation with your personal booking code.
- Book your theory exam session the way your office tells you.

Booking the Theory Exam Appointment
Once registered, exam slots are assigned based on availability:
- Major cities (Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna): waiting times of 4–8 weeks
- Smaller provincial offices: often 2–4 weeks
Driving Freedom estimate, October 2026 — waiting times vary by city and office.
Your office gives you the date, time and place of your session.
What to Bring on Exam Day
- Your stamped application (TT2112) with its attachments
- A valid identity document and your codice fiscale
- Your residence permit, if you are a non-EU citizen
- No pens, phones, or notes allowed in the exam room
After Passing: Getting the Foglio Rosa
Once you pass, the Motorizzazione registers your result within a few days (Driving Freedom estimate, October 2026; varies by office). You can then:
- Request your Foglio Rosa from the same office
- Find an autoscuola near you for the compulsory driving lessons (8 hours under DM 294/2025, not yet applied in practice; some autoscuole still accept 6)
- Begin booking the practical exam through the autoscuola
What Happens if You Fail
Wait at least one month, then book again. Within 6 months of your application you have 2 attempts in total; after that you need a new application and new fees.
Prepare Thoroughly Before Booking
Waiting times can be long in big cities, so book early — but only once you are consistently scoring 27+/30 in timed mock exams.
