If a long descent is travelled with the gearbox in neutral and the engine switched off, even if one believes they are saving fuel, the risk of causing accidents increases as the braking distance increases dangerously; it becomes difficult to move the steering wheel if the vehicle is equipped with power steering, to brake if the vehicle is equipped with power brakes, or to turn the steering wheel quickly to avoid an obstacle. It is not true that there is an electrical overload, that a differential fault may occur, or that it is advisable to remove the vehicle's ignition key.
