The 12-Month Rule for Non-EU Residents

If you are from a non-EU country, you can drive in Italy using your valid home country license accompanied by an International Driving Permit for up to one year after registering your Italian residency.

Warning: After 12 months of official residency, your foreign license becomes legally invalid for use in Italy. Driving on it after this point is a serious offense.

EU vs. Non-EU License Conversion

The process for conversion depends entirely on where your original license was issued.

For EU License Holders

If you hold a license from another European Union country, the process is simple. Your license is valid in Italy. You do not need to take a test. You simply apply for a "riconoscimento" (recognition) or "conversione" (conversion) at your local Motorizzazione.

For Non-EU License Holders (Bilateral Agreements)

If your country (like Iran, Bangladesh, Pakistan, or Egypt) does not have a bilateral agreement with Italy, you cannot convert your license directly. You must pass the full Italian Patente B theory and practical exams.

Navigating the Patente B Theory Exam Without an Autoscuola

If you must take the exam, traditional driving schools (autoscuole) often charge between €500 and €800 just for the theory course. Worse, these courses are entirely in technical Italian, which is incredibly difficult if Italian is your second language.

Instead, many expats choose to register as a privatista (independent candidate). Every candidate, privatisti included, must still complete compulsory driving lessons at an autoscuola before the practical exam: DM 294/2025 sets them at 8 hours, but it is not applied in practice yet and some autoscuole still accept 6 hours, so ask your autoscuola which rule applies to you.
